Estate Planning Tasks to Get Done While Quarantined

Most of us are stuck at home for the foreseeable future due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even if you’re still working from home, chances are you’re finding yourself with quite a bit more free time than you’re used to. This down time is a perfect chance for you to get some important tasks done at home, such as reviewing your estate plan.

Here are a few things you can do:

  • Locate and read through your existing documents: It might have been a while since you last pulled out your estate planning documents to read through them, so make sure you can actually find them at home. Once you do, carefully read through the contents of the documents to refresh your memory. It is not uncommon for people to believe they made a particular decision when they either made a different decision or did not make a decision of that kind at all.
  • Note changes you need to make: Take notes while you’re reading about anything that might have changed about your wishes or your life circumstances since your last update of your estate planning documents. Be as specific as possible with regard to the sections that need changes so they’re easy to locate again.
  • Get in touch with your attorneys: If the changes you have are small enough, you can likely communicate the changes you need to make to your attorney via email. Significant changes may require a phone call and lengthier discussion. Your attorney will be able to recommend the best manner of proceeding with the changes you need to make given the current circumstances with the pandemic.
